5 great benefits of learning English at a UK summer school

While English is a language spoken across the world, it certainly isn’t the easiest to master.

Sending your child to a summer language camp here in the UK is a great way to support them. But what exactly will your child gain from attending a summer school?

Here’s a quick guide to just five of the benefits of studying at one of our residential or day summer schools.

  1. Gain confidence in English

Taking part in a Discovery Summer course is a great way for your child to develop their English language whilst having a great time.

In a summer camp environment they will learn through fun, engaging activities. In our English Skills they’ll develop core skills – speaking, writing, reading and listening.

Classes are lively, interactive and fun e.g.  Royal roleplays – research a day in the life of King Charles,, write interview questions, imagine his answers

In English Workshops they explore new topics and boost their confidence in spoken English as they learn through doing.

Students choose a different fun, task-based workshop each week. e.g. British tea party, Drama & Music, Lego Robotics, Magical Stories, Mad Scientists, Young Film Makers.

Additionally, we’re proud to support many of our students in preparing for their Trinity Graded Exam in Spoken English. There are many benefits to gaining this internationally-recognised certificate, and preparation for the exam provides our students with a real focus on their English studies.

  1. Make international friends

In our friendly, multinational classes, we encourage group work, collaboration and discussion with the aim of developing your child’s confidence both in and outside of the classroom. Your child will be meeting and mixing with students from all over the world – in summer 2023 we welcomed students of 54 different nationalities.

On our residential camps your child will also have the opportunity to make friends with English speakers of their own age – our English Student Hosts. They live amongst the international students, sleeping in the same accommodation and taking part in classes, excursions, and activities. As a result many of our students make lasting friendships with English Student Hosts..

  1. Explore a new culture

All of our programmes are designed to both provide your child with opportunities to learn all about British life and culture both inside and outside of the classroom.

Students might be researching British kings and queens in their Skills class, designing and building a London landmark in their English Workshop and visiting an iconic location on an excursion.

From playing British sports, to visiting famous landmarks and trying traditional dishes such as fish and chips, their stay with us will be packed with the very best of British fun!

  1. Try something new

Our residential summer schools  have impressive facilities for sport, arts and creative activities so your child will have a wide variety of options to choose from.

Some are challenging, some teach new skills and some are simply fun.

We encourage them to keep active with sports such as dodgeball,  tag rugby and ultimate frisbee. They can also get creative with digital photography, stop-motion animation, henna hand painting or model making. There are also special events such as archery, circus skills, Nerf Blasters, pool parties and ceilidhs.

  1. University and career pathways

For older students who already have an advanced level of English our Pre-University summer programme offers a great opportunity for your child to explore new subjects and prepare for university and career choices.

Students choose a different Major and Minor each week in subjects such as Economics & Business, Advanced STEM, Technology & AI, Debate, and Film Making.

Our specialist teachers bring complex subjects to life and ensure classes are practical so that your child will learn by doing.

For those considering university study at an English-speaking university we offer the opportunity to study for and take the IELTS exam.
