Is it possible to prepare for IELTS on a residential summer course?

Joining a residential summer school is an ideal way to build confidence in your spoken and written English while learning more about British Culture, taking part in a varied activity programme and meeting new friends.   

Our range of exam options offer students the opportunity to focus their studies by preparing for an internationally recognised English language exam. Students on our English and Multi-Activity programmes can prepare for and take the Trinity GESE exam while those on our Pre-University programme can prepare for the IELTS exam (Optional: IELTS exam may be taken on  18 July or 1 August 2024, subject to availability and at extra cost approx. 250 GBP – including exam fees, payable to the exam centre and travel expenses)

What is IELTS?                                                                                                         

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a popular English language proficiency test for higher education. If you are applying to an English-speaking university programme in the future, it is likely you will need this qualification.

Who can take this programme?

Our Pre-University programme takes place in historic Winchester College and is designed for 15-17 year olds.

This programme is suitable if

  • You have an Upper Intermediate level of English
  • You are planning on applying to an English-speaking university programme
  • You are returning to Winchester and would like to challenge yourself with a new Major
  • You want to develop your academic English skills e.g. essay writing, reading and listening techniques

What is my level of English?

English levels are measured against the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Contact our friendly team if you are unsure of your level. Following a brief diagnostic, we will suggest the most suitable programme and exam option for you. If we would like to find out more, we can arrange a brief online ‘diagnostic’ session with our Academic Manager. 

What will I learn on a two-week IELTS preparation course?

  • Find out what examiners are looking for, develop your academic essay writing skills
  • Weekly mock tests (optional) under exam conditions focus your studies
  • Detailed weekly feedback – boost your scores
  • Study a range of Minor subjects e.g. Debate, IELTS speaking & listening to complement your studies
  • Study alongside English Teenagers, our English Student Hosts – improve your pronunciation

Can I take the exam at the end of the two-week preparation course?

  • If you are over 16 years of age, you can register to take the IELTS exam  Optional: IELTS exam may be taken on 18 July or 1 August 2024, subject to availability and at extra cost (approx. 250 GBP – including exam fees, payable to the exam centre and travel expenses)
  • Even if you decide not to take the exam, you can join the IELTS preparation Major and Minor – you will be developing important academic English skills for the future as you study alongside English teenagers 
  • Most universities will require that an IELTS exam is taken within a specific time frame before applying – please check with the university for more details
