Experience the best of UK culture: summer school highlights 2023

As summer turns to autumn, we at Discovery Summer start planning our 2024 programmes but before that it’s important to look back at the highlights of summer 2023.

Amazing excursions to London and beyond

We know that many of our summer school students have chosen to come to the UK to experience our culture and learn about our history. That’s why our programmes are action packed to include activities, trips and classes to help you learn about and explore Britain.

In summer 2023 our international students enjoyed many trips to historic sites around England.

Our Radley students visited Warwick Castle – a stunning piece of mediaeval architecture where students witnessed jousting and falconry in action. A trip to Stratford-upon-Avon was also on offer to see Shakespeare’s birthplace and soak up the atmosphere of this historic market town.

Meanwhile our Marymount 8-13 year old students were treated to mid-week and Sunday excursions to see the sights of London including a river cruise and a chance to see Buckingham Palace.

For our Pre-University students the excursion programme included guided walks in historic Winchester and the famous university city Oxford as well as a visit to Roman baths.

Activities are fun (and delicious!)

Back on campus our students enjoy a wide variety of afternoon and evening activities linked to British traditions.

At Shrewsbury School our 11-16 year olds took part in a traditional English tea party – a great opportunity to learn idiomatic English phrases.

Baking is another favourite for our summer school students. Our London teenagers made traditional short-bread biscuits whilst our Global Young Leaders took part in a scone-making competition.

Coming to an English summer school is also a great opportunity to try our traditional British sports such as cricket, rounders, rugby and even Real Tennis.

English Student Hosts – your guide to real British life

Of course, the best way to learn colloquial English is by talking to people of your own age. On all our residential courses, international students meet and mix with our “English Student Hosts” – 11-17-year-olds who love to make new friends from around the world. Dressed in their blue Discovery Summer t-shirts, our English Student Hosts are recognisable around the school.

As the English Student Hosts are completely integrated into the programme there are many opportunities to learn about British slang, school life, TikTok trends and where to find the best Bubble Tea in Covent Garden.

Our English Student Hosts also take part in classes to ensure you have maximum opportunities to improve your English. Curious about how you learn English at Discovery Summer? Explore more here.
